The BC Conservative Party has stepped out of obscurity with duel announcements of a new webiste (www.conservativesbc.com) and their leader Wilf Hanni running in the upcoming (yet to be announced) Vancouver-Fariview bi-election. This party has taken a dramaic leap forward in the last few months and I am left to wonder what has made the difference for them? I am also left to wonder if anyone is paying attention?
The Liberal Government has the media firmly in its hands and the new "Gag Laws" keep anyone from telling all prior to the 2009 election. In an environment that is to unfriendly to the emergence of new ideas and developing political entities how are the BC Conservatives doing it?
I think it is due to a mixture of pieces. 1) the BC Conservative Party has to have enlisted new blood with new ideas (hense their new web look and youth movement. Someone has obviously joined the party ranks who has a grasp on real politics and how to reach real people, 2) they have moved from a fixed conservative ideology to a more moderate and open policy platform that upholds the interests and needs of British Columbian's over dogmatics. This is a departure from "we are right regardless if you agree" politics (the BC Liberals could do well to remember this), and 3) I think that BC is getting ready for a shift away from the Liberal's and they are looking for an alternative who's name is not NDP.
The BC Conservative Party is a long way off from being that alternative but if they continue on the path they look to be heading in they may just be able to make that case by 2013.
