Well, Gail, inasmuch as Don says he’s heading up to Whistler, and that he used to stop off in Squamish to buy his discounted tickets at the 7-11, we can pretty much take it for granted that he’s going to be driving the Sea-to-Sky Hiway.
However, on the extremely slim chance that Don lives in Courtenay and takes the ferry from Nanaimo over to Horseshoe Bay and then treks the Sea-to-Sky and return, then he’s into the Whistler experience and isn’t into penny pinching by using his local mountain.
I will admit that I haven’t been to Vancouver Island for 20 years or so (ferry costs and wait times are ridiculous); however, my wife goes to Victoria quite often for a change of scenery, and even she complains about the ferry costs and the hassles (and it’s my money she’s spending). A two-day weekend, without skiing, runs to about $400 for her alone in Victoria with meals and one night of accommodation. A day trip to Whistler from the Lower Mainland, without skiing, requires no ferry or accommodation, and $200 covers gas and one high-end meal for two people.
