Ron must be smoking some of BC's finest. Having lived in BC for 12 years - albeit it in Victoria on Vancouver Island - I can only say that Ron must have an axe to grind - or there is an agenda there. You can learn a lot about a person by their writing. Some people just scare others away, although there are mean people everywhere.
One observation about Vancouver is the rain, but coming from England that will be nothing new. The rain tends to be light and constant, so Vancouverites go about their business regardless of the rain. The very mountains that provide the outdoor adventure - and make Vancouver so pretty - are responsible for the rain. As the winds come off the Pacific and hit the mountains, they rise and drop their moisture on Vancouver. If you like the mountains, you have to accept the rain.
BC residents shop across the border in the US not to see smiling faces, but to see lower prices. Canadians are being mugged with the prices we pay for goods - all goods. Shopping in Seattle is therefore popular, with major savings. Example: Running shoes are 50% cheaper in the US, motor cars are 10% to 30% cheaper, as are clothing, electronics etc - most goods.
Traffic is another consideration, as Vancouver has quite the traffic problem, and check out residential property prices in Vancouver, as they are very high. However, if you like the outdoors, then there is no better place to live than Vancouver.
