The cormorants have been building their nests in the island's wind-blown Juniper trees for over 75 years now, and provide a delightful spectacle for passing boaters and kayakers to observe. When not nesting, the cormorants can be seen periodically drying their wings and black plumages after returning from fishing the waters of the Trincomali Channel. Visitors are urged not to go ashore, but rather to observe the nesting birds from a distance.

On the Pacific coast this species breeds from the Strait of Georgia south to Baja California and the Revillagigedo Islands. Mandarte Island Ecological Reserve, east of Sidney on Vancouver Island, has a more significant breeding colony of Double-crested Cormorants, in terms of numbers.
