Mouat Regional Park
Premier Listings for Mouat Regional Park
Mouat Regional Park is a peaceful wooded park just a short walk uphill from the village of Ganges, the commercial heart of Saltspring Island. The park is a quiet, reflective place, providing a relaxing break amongst its beautiful trees, streams and enormous ferns. Mouat Park provides numerous short hiking trails of around 10 minutes in length. Facilities at Mouat include toilets and picnic tables, and fresh water is available. The park is a good setting in which to relax after exploring the community of Ganges and the many treasures of Saltspring Island.
The 23-hectare Mouat Park has recently become popular for hiking and its picturesque course for Disc Golf, also called Frisbee Golf. Once a popular camping location, the Disc Golf course now occupies the old camping oval. Campers will still find fabulous campsite facilities on Saltspring Island, located in the seaside ambience of Ruckle Provincial Park.
The park is named after the Mouat family, immigrants from Scotland that arrived on the island in the 1880s. Descendants of the Mouat family remain on Saltspring Island to this day. The Mouat’s Trading Company store is a cornerstone of the community of Ganges, with the original store having opened in Ganges in 1907 when Gilbert Mouat and his mother, Jane Mouat, purchased the Malcolm & Purvis store that was located adjacent to the present main store building.
Mouat Regional Park is located in the village of Ganges on Saltspring Island in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, 8 miles (13 km) north of the ferry dock at Fulford Harbour. There is also a BC Ferries dock in nearby Long Harbour, with links to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island, Tsawwassen on the mainland, and Galiano Island (Sturdies Bay), Mayne Island (Village Bay), and Pender Island (Otter Bay) in the Southern Gulf Islands.
