Premier Listings for Small Inlet Marine Park
Located at the northeastern tip of Quadra Island, Small Inlet Marine Provincial Park provides a well-protected anchorage where boaters can wait for slack water to pass through the tidal rapids of Discovery Passage, Okisollo Channel and Hole in the Wall.
The 487-hectare park protects second growth forest and two small lakes, with Small Inlet providing a totally protected anchorage in all weather conditions. The park has one rough hiking trail approximately 1.5 km long from the southeast corner of Small Inlet to Newton Lake, a small lake suitable for swimming and picnicking. Popular recreational activities include boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and swimming in the ocean or Newton Lake. Salmon and rockfish can be found in the waters around Small Inlet.
Between Kanish Bay and Waiatt Bay there are more than ten archaeological sites containing remnants of cultures that thrived in the region over the past several thousand years. The area east of Discovery Passage, which incorporates present day Kanish Bay, Granite Bay and Small Inlet, reveals extensive evidence of early and primitive Indian settlement. Traces of logging, mining and farming activities around the turn of the century are also still visible.
Kayaking: Paddlers can set in at Rock Bay, north of Campbell River. Kayakers can portage the 1.5-km trail from the head of Small Inlet across to Waiatt Bay in Octopus Islands Provincial Park on the eastern shores of Quadra Island. The Octopus Islands provide incentive enough for adventurers to undertake this arduous portage leg of their journey.
No facilities are available in the park. There are no designated campsites at this park, although random wilderness camping is allowed. No facilities are provided and there is no camping fee.
Small Inlet Marine Provincial Park is reached by boat only, from Vancouver Island across Johnstone Strait, or from Granite Bay on Quadra Island. Small Inlet Marine Park is accessible year round.
Boaters can reference marine chart #3538 for more information on this area. The nearest settlement, at Granite Bay on Quadra Island, is reached by ferry from Campbell River to Quathiaski Cove, and then by vehicle via Granite Bay Road.
