Premier Listings for Wallace Island Marine Park

The 72-hectare Wallace Island Marine Provincial Park is located in Trincomali Channel between the northern ends of Saltspring Island and Galiano Island in the BC Gulf Islands.

A pleasant place to stop, Wallace Island is perfect for day trips and overnight camping.

The late author, David Conover purchased the island in 1946. The interesting buildings that remain in Conover Cove were part of a resort on the island.

Conover’s books, One Man’s Island and Once Upon an Island, describe the struggle and joys of operating a resort and living on a small island through the changing seasons.

Hiking and walking trails will take you throughout most of the island, providing views of the folded rock formations that compose the island.

Walking south will take you to Panther Point, named after the H.M.S Panther, a ship that ran aground here in 1874. Explore the numerous beaches, coves and offshore islets.

Bald Eagles, Black-tailed Deer and Mink are regular sightings, and Harbour seals, Sealions and River Otters are commonly seen in the surrounding waters. Recreational opportunities include swimming, diving, fishing, kayaking and hiking.

Facilities at Wallace Island Marine Provincial Park include an information shelter, water, pit toilets and picnic tables. Wilderness, walk-in camping is allowed in the park, which is accessible by boat only. There are 9 sites with tent pads at Chivers Point and 1 site at Cabin Bay – both sites are ideal for kayak camping. Approximately 8 open field sites are available at Conover Cove; these sites are adjacent to dock facilities and stern tie rings. A camping fee is in place at Wallace Island, payable at self-registration vaults located near the camping areas.

Princess Bay provides good anchorage for boaters whilst Conover Cove has limited anchorage but good docking facilities providing shore access. Enter both anchorages off Houston Passage, watching for reefs which lie offshore.

Access is by boat only from Chemainus or Crofton. A ferry service runs from Crofton on Vancouver Island to Vesuvius Bay on north Saltspring Island.

Kayakers can launch at Saltspring’s Southey Point for the 1-1/2 kilometre paddle to Chivers Beach on Wallace Island. Fernwood on the northeastern side of Saltspring Island also provides launching spots for Wallace Island.
