SUMMARY:Artist Amelia Ford at the Nelson Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Nelson Museum\, Archives & Gallery welcomes emerging NYC artist Amelia Ford back to her hometown for her first exhibition here at the Nelson Museum. Ford\, a graduate of LV Rogers high school\, has recently completed artist residencies in Berlin and NY\, and brings her brilliant interpretation of still life painting to Vessels\, which opens Friday\, February 14 at 7pm and runs through May 24\, 2025. \nBefore breaking the rules\, you must first understand them. Emerging artist Amelia Ford works within the confines of the traditional still life painting tradition–masterfully manipulating oils to capture the shine of an apple\, or the folds of bright silk\, or light through broken glass–but it’s in the composition of her subjects\, rather than the items themselves\, where the deeper meaning lies. \nFinding inspiration in the works of Vanessa Bell\, Ethel Sands\, Gluck\, and Berthe Morisot–female impressionists who share her interest in challenging the traditional style\, Ford uses many of the same objects but foregoes the dusty symbology of death and religion and replaces them with modern themes of femininity\, sexualization\, and dehumanization. \nThe female form is a common thread between Ford’s current study in still life and her earlier work. Pieces such as “Embrace” (2022) feature unsettling images of both man-made and natural female bodies\, highlighting how women are often treated as objects. She uses materials like plastic and human skin to explore the idea of women being seen as part-human\, part-object\, where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s artificial. \n“How is sustainable social equity possible without the acknowledgement of unsustainable objects? I view these objects as evidence of inequality\, and the evidence exists among us\, with us\, and for us\,” writes Ford in an artist statement for the 2022 group show The Assembly // Sustainability at the Alternator Gallery in Kelowna. “I present this evidence as a blow-up doll\, both environmentally and socially unsustainable\, a fake plastic body is humanized to dehumanize us.” \nExamples of both distinct periods in Ford’s emerging career will be on display in Vessels\, which opens Friday\, February 14 at the Nelson Museum\, Archives & Gallery. Ford will be in attendance at the opening and will also be participating in events at the Nelson Museum in the weeks following. Vessels runs February 15 to May 24 in Gallery B. \n“There is confidence and opulence in the lines and colour on display\,” says Nelson Museum Curator Arin Fay. “Amelia brings a mature style to her work. The themes and critical inquiry that are carried through the works are not imposed but emerge\, revelling in colour and shadow and questioning the world in which we live.” \nBorn and raised in Nelson\, Ford graduated from LV Rogers Secondary in 2018 and completed her Bachelor of fine Arts at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in 2022. She has participated in exhibitions throughout the Southern Interior as well as in New York\, where she currently lives and works\, and is pursuing her Master of Fine Arts degree. \nFor more information about the exhibitions and events at the Nelson Museum\, visit nelsonmuseum.ca. \n250-352-9813\n502 Vernon Street\nNelson\, BC V1L 4E7\nCanada

SUMMARY:2024 Winter Solstice Show
DESCRIPTION:2024 Winter Solstice Show\n\n\n\n\nThe 9th Annual Winter Solstice Concert\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, Dec 21st\, 2:30pm & 7pm (St. Peter Quamichan Hall \, Duncan\, BC)\nSunday\, Dec 22th\, 2:30pm (James Bay United\, Victoria)\nTickets here: https://cariburdett.com/winter-solstice-show/ \n  \n\n\nLila Music Centre invites you to the 9th Annual Winter Solstice Concert (on Dec 21st and 22nd)\, where we will celebrate the return of the light! This family oriented musical tradition weaves vocal and acoustic music that ranges from jazz to folk\, including premiers of original song compositions created especially for this event. This concert provides warmth and peace in the spirit of beauty\, bringing people together with a focus this year on Celtic music traditions.  \nThis year’s ensemble includes Anne Schaefer (Voice\, Guitar\, Harp)\, Quin Etheridge-Pedden from the Unfaithful Servants (Violin)\, Adrian Dolan from The Bills (Piano\, Accordion and Violin)\,  Scott White from The Bills (Bass)\, Kim June Johnson (Voice\, Guitar) and Cari Burdett (Vocals). We are also pleased to be welcoming the youth voices of Opal and Cassia Hollett. \nSongs to look forward to include the acapella Christmas classics: Lo How a Rose\, Carol of the Bells\, In the Bleak Midwinter and Gloria in Excelsis. Upbeat numbers include a full group rendition of Soul Cake and some joyful fiddle tunes. Other audience favorites that will be sure to please: Calling All Angels and the Lost Word Blessings. \nUnique to this concert\, musicians will collect holiday wishes from the audience and create one-of-a-kind pieces of music\, to honor this very special time of year. “Every year we offer a new array of songs connecting us to the Winter Season and Solstice and 2024 will not disappoint” explains Burdett. \nAnne Schaefer will be sharing an original piece called Constellation which she elaborates\, “appeared as a song to celebrate our individual beauty and how the sum of our collective parts make spectacular configurations\, just as with constellations in the night sky….and how we need a truly dark night to really see the beauty of even the brightest stars”.   \nKim June Johnson’s “I Wish I Had Woken With the Dawn” is about waking up –  to light\, but also to life itself\, rather than succumbing to the numbness and distraction that the over-culture perpetuates. “It’s a praise song for presence\, which in my view\, is what the energy of winter solstice is; the dark reminds us of the light we miss and want to treasure more fully when it returns.”

SUMMARY:REGROWTH – Abstract Paintings by Lion Nie
DESCRIPTION:Featuring recent paintings by Surrey-based artist Lion Nie.\n\nImmigrant artists from all over the world bloom in Metro Vancouver. “Art is true temperament\,” and inevitably\, artists reset their creative paradigm and language\, projecting and continuing their original creativity\, formats and media after they settle down in Vancouver. Canada’s unique and diverse artistic wealth continues to write a unique and diverse art history for the Canada’s Pacific Coast.\n\nArtist Lion Nie’s arrival has injected new energy into this development. He made the symbol he used\, the Möbiusband\, and his original expression more vivid and dramatic\, either making it the protagonist that fills the canvas\, or using it to define the tone and extension of the meaning of the painting. The Möbiusband often is considered to be the creative source of the infinity symbol “∞.” If we walk on it\, the journey will go back and forth endlessly and regenerate… infinite territory and unpredictable encounters.
