Discovery of a rich galena deposit in 1893, and the establishment of the St. Eugene Mine, gave birth to the town of Moyie on Moyie Lake.

The developing lead and silver mine, for a time one of the richest in the province, influenced the expansion of the mining corporation and the Crows Nest Pass Railway until its demise in 1911. Only the 1907 fire hall beside the highway, St. Peter’s Church on Tavistock Street, the mine tailings and crumbling foundations remain as symbols of turn-of-the-century Moyie.

Originally known as Grande Quete, the origin of Moyie’s name is thought to be the french word mouille, meaning wet.

Population: 450

Location: Moyie is located on Highway 3/95 on the eastern shore of Moyie Lake, 19 miles (30 km) south of Cranbrook.

Walking Tour: Embark on a Moyie walkabout tour and visit the old mine tailings pile, also visible from the highway.

Cemetery: Stroll through the cemetery on the western side of town, one of the few remaining landmarks from Moyie’s mining heyday.

If you like cool, secluded picnics beside a welcoming lake on a hot summer day, then Moyie Lake Provincial Park is the spot for you. The park occupies the north end of the large, scenic Moyie Lake on the eastern fringe of the Purcell Mountains.

Fishing: Fly-casting and trolling for trout on Moyie Lake is fun here, but if you would rather watch than catch, then you can view kokanee salmon spawning on the gravel beds of the Moyie River and Peavine Creek in the fall.

Golf: Golfers can head north on Highway 3 to play the 4 courses in Cranbrook: Cranbrook Golf Club on 2nd Street South, Way-Lyn Ranch Golf Course in the beautiful Saint Mary’s River Valley, the family-oriented executive Par-3 Mission Hills Golf Course on Theatre Road, and the 18-hole St. Eugene Mission.
