Premier Listings for Kano Inlet
The beautiful Kano Inlet is located on the west coast of Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, near the southwest end of Graham Island. There are no communities in this area, which includes the western portion of the Queen Charlotte Mountains.
The west coast of Haida Gwaii has some of the most rugged and exposed shoreline on the British Columbia coast, with scenic beauty that is unparalleled in the province.
Sport fishing is the main attraction of Kano Inlet, and Chinook salmon are the main target species for most anglers, although catches of halibut, lingcod, and rockfish are also great. Discriminating anglers are accommodated on anchored luxury sport fishing vessels, which serve as headquarters for the last great fishing adventure on the west coast of the North American continent.
The remote location severely restricts the number of people with access to the fish that call this area home or migrate through the area on their journey to their natal spawning grounds in the Pacific Northwest. It’s the world-record-class salmon and halibut that make Kano Inlet a regular stop for discriminating anglers, providing some of the highest quality fishing and sightseeing in British Columbia. The mothership’s fully-guided boats are often the only boats in sight.
The sport fishing companies welcome their first guests of the season in mid May, to coincide with runs of Chinook, Chum, Pink and Sockeye salmon, as well as Halibut. The annual Kano Inlet Derby is hosted in mid June. July sees the start of the Coho season, with continuing runs of Halibut, Chinook, Chums, Pinks and Sockeye, continuing through August into September. The season closes soon after the Labour Day weekend in early September.
The springs average in the 35 to 45 lb range, with Haida Gwaii being one of the only places in the world where anglers release tyee salmon, knowing there are bigger fish out there just waiting to be caught! The area is also one of the few places where anglers can land world record class salmon and monster ‘Barn door’ halibut on the same day.
Other than fisheries – sport and commercial – the land supports a modest logging industry and has supported some mining activity in the past. Important commercial fishing activities include the troll fishery and the terminal net fisheries in some coastal inlets.
Location: Kano Inlet is located immediately south of Rennell Sound, and access to the area is limited to a logging road to Rennell Sound. The rest of the area is accessible by vessel or air only. There is a boat launch in Rennell Sound. The Haida Gwaii islands are accessed by ferry from Prince Rupert to the Skidegate Landing Ferry Terminal on Graham Island, by air from Vancouver to Sandspit on Moresby Island (770 km), and by air from Prince Rupert to Sandspit. Other commercial air services (including float planes and helicopters) are available at Sandspit, Queen Charlotte City and Masset. A 20-minute ferry ride connects Graham and Moresby Islands.
South of the entrance to Kano Inlet is Carew Bay, a very pretty bight with a salmon stream emptying into the head of the bay. Carew Bay is well protected by Cadman Island, which offers good fishing and shelters the anchorage from the open ocean. Visitors will be rewarded with a smooth sandy beach leading over a rocks to the forest. Watch for deer, and be aware of the presence of black bears in the area.
North of Kano Inlet is Rennell Sound, the largest sound on the west coast of the islands, cutting 18 miles (29 km) into Graham Island. Bounded by the snowcapped Queen Charlotte Mountains, the deep inlet offers wonderful recreational and sightseeing opportunities. The rugged coastline, beautiful crescent beaches and excellent beachcombing along the gravel shoreline, great hiking, camping, fishing and kayaking make the trip very worthwhile.
