Gitnadoiks River Provincial Park (57,698 hectares) is located in the heart of the Kitimat Ranges of the Coast Mountains on the West coast of BC.
The Kitimat Ranges are characterized by dome-like granite mountains with many sheer, bare faces and numerous waterfalls. Elevations within the park range from about 100 metres in the valley bottom to about 1,800 metres on the surrounding ridges and peaks.
In conjunction with Foch-Gilttoyees Provincial Park and Protected Area, Gitnadoiks River Park creates a wildlife link between the Douglas Channel and the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary (Foch-Gilttoyees Park, Gitnadoiks River Park, Exchamsiks River Provincial Park, Exchamsiks River corridor, and Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary).
Wildlife: The park protects moose, beaver, otter, mink and wolves in the valley bottom areas, with mountain goats on the rock faces and slides at higher elevations. Birdlife includes a variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, eagles, hawks, hummingbirds, swallows, thrushes, crows, woodpeckers, warblers and sparrows. Trumpeter Swans nest in the park, one of only three confirmed nesting sites known in British Columbia.
Gitnadoiks River Provincial Park offers excellent sport fishing, with at least 13 species of fish occurring in the area, including Pacific salmon (five species), rainbow trout and cutthroat trout, dolly varden char, and mountain whitefish.
Canoeing and kayaking are possible in the park, but visitors must be experienced paddlers capable of travelling in strong river currents, with technical navigation skills. Flash flooding often occurs after rains.
Wilderness, backcountry and walk-in camping is allowed, but no facilities are provided. There is one backcountry cabin located on Alastair Lake available for public use. Note that swimming is not recommended along the rocky shoreline at Alastair Lake. Visitors should bring their own drinking water as potable water is not available in the park.
Gitnadoiks River Provincial Park is located approximately 31 miles (50 km) west of Terrace on the south side of the Skeena River. The closest boat launch is located at Exchamsiks River Provincial Park. The closest communities are Terrace (50 km to the east), Port Edward (80 km to the west) and Prince Rupert (90 km to the west). There is no road access to the park.
