The 30-hectare North Thompson Oxbows Jensen Island Park protects an oxbow, a U-shaped bend in the North Thompson River. The oxbow fills during spring runoff and dries through the summer, creating a seasonal range of riparian (riverbank) habitats.
The park contains rich marsh and wetland habitat that is important for a variety of waterfowl species, as well as otters and beavers. It is a migration stop for white pelicans, tundra and trumpeter swans, passerines and other waterfowl. The North Thompson River also provides spawning grounds for Chinook salmon.
There are no camping or day-use facilities provided at the park, as it is a riparian habitat and covered by water for approximately four months of the year.
North Thompson Oxbows Jensen Island Park is located on the North Thompson River, 15 miles (24 km) north of Kamloops off Westside Road. The park can only be accessed via private land.
