Johnstone Creek is a scenic and peaceful area, shaded by stands of Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine and aspen. The park is only open May through September and is a perfect retreat from the afternoon heat, or for a restful night after a day of driving the highway.
A 15 minutes hike loops along the creek and out to three different benches that offer views of the rugged terrain. There are steep cliffs beyond the benches, do not hike beyond the viewpoints. Douglas fir, larch and spruce trees provide habitat for woodpeckers and other cavity nesting bird species. White-tailed deer are often seen in the park.
There are 16 vehicle-accessible campsites, including one double site, all of which are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The operator maintains the park from May 20 to Sept 15, though the park is open until Oct 31 or the first snowfall, after which the gate is locked. The park is gated just off the highway and the campground is located 500m beyond the gate.
The park is located near Rock Creek on Hwy 3, about 45 km east of Osoyoos.
