Premier Listings for Port Louis

Amidst unparalleled scenic beauty, and some of the most rugged shoreline on the west coast of Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, Port Louis serves as a comfortable home base for adventurers seeking world-class sports fishing.

There are no communities in this part of the remote coastline, only remote fishing lodges and sport fishing motherships catering to the avid sport fisherman. Port Louis also provides safe refuge for mariners seeking respite from the unpredictable weather.

The fishing lodges are situated among rain forests and mountain streams in the heart of Graham Island’s proposed ecological preserve. Guests fish for salmon and halibut, fish for Tuna 15 miles offshore, or just enjoy nature in splendid isolation.

When not fishing, visitors can hike the nearby mountains, go ocean kayaking, or beachcomb the desolate beaches.

Location: Port Louis is located on the west coast of Graham Island, the largest of the two main islands of Haida Gwaii. The Haida Gwaii islands are accessed by ferry from Prince Rupert to the Skidegate Landing Ferry Terminal on Graham Island, by air from Vancouver to Sandspit on Moresby Island (770 km), and by air from Prince Rupert to Sandspit. Other commercial air services (including float planes and helicopters) are available at Sandspit, Queen Charlotte City and Masset. A 20-minute ferry ride connects Graham and Moresby Islands.

The Coates Creek Fishway is operated as a fish ladder to introduce a naturally sustainable coho salmon run on Coates Creek, and ensure a healthy return of coho into the future. The presence of the jumping pools allow the coho to successfully negotiate the creek and enter the spawning grounds above the falls. Coates Creek flows from Ironside Mountain into the head of Port Louis.

Tingley Cove provides a safe anchorage for boaters in Port Louis.

Adjacent to Port Louis to the west is Kiokathli Inlet, between Port Louis and Louis Point, which juts out into the Pacific Ocean.

Wildlife: The marine waters between Tian Head in the north and Louis Point to the south, including Port Louis, Otard Bay and Tian Bay, are an important feeding area for the threatened Marbled Murrelet. The islands and islets between Frederick and Hippa islands also support black oystercatchers, pigeon guillemots, glaucous-winged gulls, pelagic cormorants, Cassin’s auklets and storm petrels.
