Premier Listings for Cormorant Channel Marine Park
Cormorant Channel Marine Provincial Park is located in the Cormorant Channel, on either side of Weynton Pass, north of Alert Bay and Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island.
The park incorporates the eastern portion of the Pearse Islands, the Plumper Islands and several nearby smaller islands at the junction of Queen Charlotte and Johnstone Straits.
The park is undeveloped, with no facilities provided. Fishing in the swift currents of Broughton Strait and Cormorant Channel is excellent, and the wildlife-rich tidal channels attract sportsfishermen, divers and kayakers.
Sea kayaking is very popular in the boundaries of Cormorant Channel, which is part of the extremely popular Johnstone Strait sea kayaking circuit. Paddlers in the park have outstanding opportunities for whale watching and marine mammal viewing. This park also provides a corridor between Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound.
There are several good camping areas for kayakers wanting to camp overnight in Cormorant Channel; most of these are in the Pearse Islands in the western part of the park.
A number of commercial companies in Telegraph Cove, Alert Bay, Port McNeill and Port Hardy offers kayak and canoe rentals.
Cormorant Channel Marine Provincial Park is reached by private boat from Alert Bay or Telegraph Cove, across Broughton Strait in British Columbia. Kayakers eager to explore the narrow passages of the park, which surge with strong tidal currents, can paddle the 3-mile (5-km) distance to the park from Telegraph Cove.
