West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park is a delightful park on the western shore of Shawnigan Lake. This popular summer recreation area offers a wealth of outdoor activities, including fishing, boating and waterskiing – it’s a wonderful place for a family picnic.
The lake contains rainbow and cutthroat trout, kokanee and smallmouth bass. The surrounding areas provides great cycling and mountain biking terrain.
Shawnigan Lake is an excellent paddling lake and the warm water is perfect for swimming. Memory Island Provincial Park is located on the southern half of Shawnigan Lake. It only requires a short 1-km paddle to reach this tranquil little park. A boat launch is located on the west side of the Malahat Dr section of Hwy 1. Put in here and paddle up the lake to reach Memory Island, the largest of a small chain.
Come ashore to picnic, stretch your legs and do a little laid-back birdwatching. You could launch from West Shawnigan Lake Provincial but be prepared to paddle for several miles to reach the island.
Park facilities include pit toilets and picnic tables. Boat launches and boat rentals are available in the vicinity of the town of Shawnigan Lake.
West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park is located north of Victoria, 9 miles (15 km) west of Highway 1 on West Shawnigan Lake Road (access south of Shawnigan Lake).
