Premier Listings for the Cariboo

The Cariboo was a land born of dreams … dreams of discovery, yellow dust and instant riches. In 1862, Billy Barker found gold on Williams Creek, a discovery that started a rush of adventurers from North America and around the world.

Between 1862 and 1870, over 10,000 adventurous people travelled the Cariboo Waggon Road, and towns sprang up in their wake, from Lillooet in the south to the goldfields of Barkerville in the North.

The gush for Cariboo gold soon declined, but not the trek of discovery into the rugged wilderness of the Cariboo. People from all over the world still venture here, following the footsteps of the expeditions that went before them. It is still a land of golden dreams with summer images of golden rolling pastures, grazing horses, and forest meadows filled in spring with beautiful flowers.

A journey through the Cariboo is easier now. Travellers enjoy amenities of every kind; excellent accommodations, from luxury resorts to quaint lakeside cabins, cities and towns that meet all your service needs, and fine dining and shopping. You will make many friends on your journey, from its beginning to its end. So bring your binoculars, your camera, your nature guide books and let your journey begin.

South Cariboo: The South Cariboo is just a short breathtaking drive from Vancouver. This four-season destination offers a lifetime of memorable experiences with outdoor activities for the entire family. Discover miles of multi-use, four season trails, play a round of golf, and enjoy some of BC’s best freshwater sport fishing. Relive Gold Rush history, enjoy exceptional water recreation on countless lakes, and experience the “Wild West” on horseback at one of the regions many guest ranches and spas. Crisp, sunny winters provide the perfect setting for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, dog sledding, snowboarding, outdoor skating and snowshoeing.

Central Cariboo: The Central Cariboo is a land of unparalleled beauty and diversity, where the geography ranges from dense forests and pristine mountain lakes to arid cactus covered vistas, rugged canyons and open plains. It is a region bursting with culture, heritage, and history. From mountain biking, to whitewater rafting and fishing in the mountains, the Central Cariboo offers year round activities to fill your adventurous soul.

North Cariboo: Born of the adventurous spirits of the great rush of gold in the 1850s and ‘60s, the North Cariboo is still an adventure seekers destination although the quest for gold has now been replaced by the quest for endless outdoor adventures.

Circle Tour: See the best of the Cariboo, Chilcotin and BC Coast on the Discovery Coast Circle Tour. Cross to Vancouver Island from Vancouver and head north, boarding the Queen of Chilliwack in Port Hardy. Return to the mainland at Bella Coola, and enjoy the grassy plateaus, rolling meadows, picturesque canyons and high mountain peaks of the Chilcotin. The old Cariboo Wagon Road will lead you back to Vancouver through the heart of the Cariboo region. The Inside Passage Tour, the Native Heritage Tour, and the Circle Tour of Northern BC all incorporate the Cariboo Highway 97 for the journey between Prince George and Vancouver.
Circle Tours in British Columbia.

Location: The Cariboo is located in the Southern Interior of BC. Access to the Cariboo is via the Cariboo Highway 97, which traverses the Cariboo from Cache Creek in the south to Quesnel in the north. West of the Cariboo is the Chilcotin region of B.C.

Awaken to the song of the Humpback whale. Fall asleep beneath the hushed canopy of a temperate rainforest. Fill your days whale-watching, kayaking with Orcas, observing sea lions romp through an underwater forest of kelp, and eagles fishing along the shore. Linger over lunch on a deserted island, scanning the horizon for signs of Orca activity.

Sign up for Ecosummer’s guided Orca Camps to kayak in the realm of Killer Whales. Explore the rainforest, hiking to waterfalls, or along ancient First Nation trails. Marvel when dolphins swim so close you wish you could reach out and touch them. Tune in to the rhythm of the tides. Escape the hubbub of your everyday world and restore life’s equilibrium on the shores of BC’s Johnstone Strait, one of the best places to whale-watch in all of British Columbia. Paddle the same waters as these gentle giants on three, four, or six-day kayaking adventures with Ecosummer Expeditions for a family vacation you’ll always remember.
