The spectacular 22-hectare (55-acre) VanDusen Botanical Garden in the heart of Vancouver has matured into a botanical garden of international stature since opening to the public in 1975.
The mild Vancouver climate allows the cultivation of an outstanding plant collection that is a delight at any time of the year. There are over 7,500 different plant species and varieties from around the world, arranged in 70 different collections. A highlight of the Garden is the annual Festival of Lights each holiday season, when the garden is decorated in over a million holiday lights. The show has been recognized on Conde Nast’s list of top displays in the world.
The garden design features displays of plants in picturesque landscape settings. Specific garden areas are planted to illustrate botanical relationships, such as the Rhododendron Walk, or geographical origins, as in Sino Himalayan Garden. These areas are set amidst rolling lawns, tranquil lakes and dramatic rockwork with vistas of the mountains and Vancouver cityscape.
There is always something interesting to see, no matter what the season. VanDusen Botanical Garden is a “bloomin” beautiful place all year round! The “Today in the Garden” display on the Entrance Deck to the garden exhibits specimens of interesting plants currently in bloom in the garden.
VanDusen Botanical Garden has long been a favourite destination for children and families to learn about and experience nature. From the Learning Garden to the hedge maze, there’s something for all ages. VanDusen is dedicated to increasing the awareness and appreciation of the plant kingdom through public education and training in botany, horticulture, ecology and related fields. Guided Walking Tours and Cart Tours for seniors and the disabled, are available during peak months.
The garden is located in the heart of Vancouver at 5251 Oak Street at the corner of 37th Avenue, between Oak and Granville Streets. Travel time by car or bus from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver International Airport is approximately 10 minutes. There is no on-street parking in the adjacent neighbourhood, so please park at Nat Bailey Stadium next to Queen Elizabeth Park and take the shuttle bus to VanDusen. Alternatively catch the #17 Oak transit bus from downtown Vancouver or along West Broadway between Cambie and Oak, and exit the bus at West 37th Avenue.
