The 5,100-hectare Tunkwa Provincial Park protects a mosaic of grasslands and interior Douglas fir forests on the Southern Thompson Plateau. The park contains two large artificially created lakes – Tunkwa and Leighton – and many other smaller lakes with their associated wetlands and marshes. Moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer frequent the park, as well as Canadian geese, mallards, snipes, vesper sparrows and mountain bluebirds. The area has a long history of ranching and traditional native use.
The waters of Tunkwa and Leighton Lakes are stocked regularly with trout, so for best results come in early spring before it warms up, or wait until fall to try your angling luck once temperatures begin to drop. You’ll find an undeveloped boat launch at Tunkwa and Leighton Lakes. Enjoy camping, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are also popular. There are numerous trails throughout the park suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
At Tunkwa Provincial Park there are three separate campgrounds; Tunkwa, Leighton and Leighton North. Combined, the three campgrounds offer 55 traditional style sites and 210 informal sites. Fees are collected from April to October. Staff will be at the campground at least once a day during the camping season. The entrance gates are not locked at night. The nearest pay phone or amenities are in Logan Lake.
Tunkwa Provincial Park is located on the southern Thompson Plateau north of Logan Lake, British Columbia, 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Kamloops. Access is by 15 miles (24 km) of gravel road from Savona, or 10 miles (16 km) from Logan Lake on the Tunkwa Lake Road.
