Anstey-Hunakwa Provincial Park at the north end of Shuswap Lake features steep forested slopes that rise from the shores of Shuswap Lake and Hunakwa Lake to alpine environments on mountain tops. There are extensive areas of old-growth forests of spruce, fir, cedar and hemlock.
The park protects habitat for grizzly bears, black bears, moose, mule deer, pine marten, Townsend’s big-eared bat, and fishers. It is also the spawning grounds for lake char, sockeye salmon, coho salmon, kokanee, and rainbow trout.
Included in the 6,852-hectare park are Hunakwa Lake and Wright Lake, which cannot be reached by road. The north end of Anstey Arm is more accessible – by boat only – but beaching of boats can be difficult, as the water in front of the sandy beaches on the north shore is shallow, especially in late summer. Boaters should approach with caution and be prepared to wade to the beach.
On the west side of Anstey Arm, where the Hunakwa Lake trail begins, the shoreline is rocky. Only small boats are able to beach. There is a 3-km Hunakwa Lake Trail from the north end of Anstey Arm to the south end of Hunakwa Lake.
Most of the park is remote, including Hunakwa Lake, with no facilities or potable water. Wilderness, backcountry or walk-in camping is allowed, but no facilities are provided. Boat accessible camping facilities are available at Shuswap Lake Marine Provincial Park (Anstey Beach and Four Mile Creek sites).
Anstey-Hunakwa Provincial Park is located at the north end of Shuswap Lake in the Shuswap region of BC. The main access to the park is by boat to the north end of Anstey Arm on Shuswap Lake.
