Sumac Ridge Estate Winery produced its first vintage in 1980, making it British Columbia's first estate winery. Since its inception, Sumac Ridge has been one of the Okanagan Valley's leading producers of VQA wines.

At the Summerland winery site, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Riesling grapes are grown. Further south, on a 115-acre vineyard in Oliver (in the south Okanagan) grown are such noble red varieties as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, in addition to a number of white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc.

The winery augments its own supply of grapes from other respected vineyards throughout the south Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys.

The first Okanagan winery to produce premium sparkling wines, Sumac Ridge has developed consistently award-winning wines, as well as a Port-style wine, from premium vinifera grapes. In 1998 Sumac Ridge was awarded more medals at international wine competitions (Gold, Silver and Bronze) than any other Canadian winery. Recently, Sumac Ridge was mentioned in Wine Spectator magazine for their 1997 Sauvignon Blanc, Steller's Jay Brut and 1997 Pinot Blanc. A consistent and determined innovator, the winery also recently introduced the region's first Meritage bottling, from grapes grown at the Black Sage Vineyard in Oliver. This Meritage also garnered a rating of 85 points in Wine Spectator magazine, the only Canadian winery to have a red wine mentioned.

Working together with their talented winemakers, partners Harry McWatters and Bob Wareham have developed many of Sumac Ridge's wines to accompany particular foods. Visitors are able to experience these unique food and wine pairings at the winery's on-site restaurant, the Cellar Door Bistro.
