The little hamlet of Edgewater is one of the older communities in the Columbia Valley.
Originally established as a farming community just before World War l, today it is a quiet residential community with a gas station, general store, Royal Canadian Legion and a campground.
Visitors approaching Edgewater by car should be aware that the area boasts a plethora of deer and elk, all ready to scare the heck out of you by leaping across the road. Remember, if you see a deer or an elk, stay on the alert for more animals.
Location: Edgewater is located on Highway 95, 8 miles (13 km) north of Radium Hot Springs and 57 miles (92 km) south of Golden.
Flume: A feature attraction of the village is its still operational flume, built in the 1930s by railway workers. This flume (an artificial channel for conveying water) is still used today by area ranches for irrigation purposes, and by the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department during its annual Duck Race.
Every Saturday morning during summer, Edgewater hosts the Edgewater Market, a fabulous place to score some deals on items ranging from vegetables, to eggs, to arts and crafts.
The area around Edgewater is Christmas Tree farming land.
Nearby Kootenay National Park offers fabulous camping, backpacking and great hiking trails, including the Floe Lake/Hawke Creek Trail and the Stanley Glacier Trail.
A visit to the nearby Radium Hot Springs is almost compulsory; naturally hot water springing from the earth and captured in a huge soaking pool in the adjoining Kootenay National Park.
Bugaboo Provincial Park, to the northwest of Edgewater, is a first-class mountaineering region; its challenging peaks in the northern extremity of the Purcell Mountain Range have attracted climbers from around the world since the late 1880s. Particularly, the North Howser ‘Tower’ and the South Ridge of Bugaboo Spire are considered very difficult. It’s certainly breathtaking, but you shouldn’t attempt to hike or climb this region unless you’re experienced, well-equipped, and in good physical condition. The Bugaboos lie 28 miles (45 km) west of Highway 95 at Brisco, north of Edgewater. There’s good gravel road access, but the roads are used by logging trucks, so check locally regarding road use and condition before embarking.
The Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Park is 34,947 hectares of virtually undisturbed wilderness located to the southwest of Edgewater. Purcell Wilderness is in a class of its own. There is no road access, and all forms of mechanized access are prohibited, including helicopters. Over 85 miles (137 km) of hiking trails, challenging mountaineering, horse riding, and winter recreation await backpackers in the five biogeoclimactic zones spread throughout this central portion of the Purcell Mountains.
Golf: Nearby Radium Hot Springs offers superb golf courses in spectacular settings, including the 9-hole, public Edgewater Hilltop Par 3 course, 9-hole Spur Valley Greens, 9-hole Se-Tetkwa Golf Course, and the 2 18-hole courses at Radium Hot Springs Resort (Radium Course and Springs Course).
