Buccaneer Bay is a wide bay between North and South Thormanby Islands in Georgia Strait off the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.
The tiny 1-hectare Buccaneer Bay Provincial Park features a broad sandy beach and is located at the southern tip of North Thormanby Island, on a sandspit which extends from Grassy Point on North Thormanby into the gap between North and South Thormanby Islands.
The large sheltered bay provides safe anchorage in most summer conditions and the shoreline is accessible by dinghy. Nearby Gill Beach on South Thormanby Island is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the Sunshine Coast.
The area features tide pools, driftwood, warm water for swimming, and is popular with families and kayakers. Wilderness camping is allowed – ten or twelve tents can be pitched on a sandy/grass area near the beach. Kayak or canoe camping is available. Care is needed paddling through Welcome Passage due to the high numbers of large vessels moving through this small channel, it creates extremely large wakes. The large wakes combined with windy weather conditions makes this section of water treacherous. There are kayak rentals available outside the park at Halfmoon Bay.
Boaters can drop the hook in a good anchorage near Water Bay at the head of Buccaneer Bay and in the superb day anchorage off Gill Beach. The Park is home to a large number of bird species and visiting sea lions that occasionally haul out on the beach.
Bring your own drinking water, as no potable water is available. Only pit toilets are provided. There are public telephones on the beach at Buccaneer Bay and at the public wharf at Vaucroft Beach.
Buccaneer Bay Provincial Park is located in the Thormanby Islands offshore from Secret Cove and Halfmoon Bay on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Access to the park is by boat only from Thormanby Channel.
