Nestled at the confluence of the Telkwa and Bulkley Rivers, the friendly community of Telkwa is known as the village Where the Rivers Meet. Telkwa is also the place where fishermen, canoeists and kayakers congregate in preparation for an outdoor adventure in the Houston area.

The history of Telkwa dates back to the 1860s, with the first arrival of construction teams to build the Collins Overland Telegraph Line, stretching to the Far North. Location: Telkwa is located in North Central British Columbia, 7 miles (11 km) south of Smithers on the Yellowhead Highway 16, halfway between Prince George and Prince Rupert.

Walking Tour: The Museum, housed in the relocated 1920 school building, offers a walking tour through the historic sections of the Village, including Fairbairn’s House (1917), the original pioneer’s General Store (1910), two 1908 Log Houses, and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad Bridge.

A special historic site in Telkwa is St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, built in 1910 from lumber donated by Telkwa’s first sawmill. The bell tower and the lich gate, where a coffin is placed during the initial part of a burial service, were added in 1921.

Tyhee Lake Provincial Park provides good summer swimming, hiking, boating, and camping, and in winter, ice-fishing and cross-country skiing. Take a scenic walk along the river and through forested areas to Tyhee Lake.

Babine Lake Marine Park (Smithers Landing) is the most northerly of the provincial parks on Babine Lake. Campsites nestled along the lakeshore make Smithers Landing a scenic camping spot, and great for boating and fishing. The park is located on Babine Lake, northeast of Smithers.

Paddling and Rafting: Canoe, kayak or raft area rivers and fabulous whitewater. Enjoy the wilderness that abounds on world-renowned rivers such as the Bulkley, Babine, Skeena, Alsek and Tatshenshini.

Horseback Riding: Experience mountain wilderness in true western style – on horseback! Guests can saddle up and explore the west on a guided multi-day pack trip in Babine Mountain Provincial Park or Spatsizi Wilderness Park. Get treated to old fashioned hospitality, home-style cooking, and a relaxed western atmosphere.

Hiking: Trek across valleys and mountain ranges for a multi-day hiking excursion or enjoy easy walking on Telkwa’s scenic trail system that links to Tyhee Lake’s trails. There is no end to the alpine lakes and meadows to explore. On Sunday mornings during the summer, join the Bulkley Valley Backpackers for guided day hikes.

Rock Climbing: No matter where the rocks lead, rock climbers will be moved by the beauty of nature in the Seven Sisters, Rocher de Boule or Copper Mountain.

Winter Activities: Skate free at one of Telkwa’s two outdoor rinks or experience the magic of winter while skating on the expansive ice of Tyhee Lake. Visitors will enjoy the opportunity to cross-country ski at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park and riders will delight with an abundance of snowmobile trail systems that guide riders into pristine powder at the Big Onion, Dome Mountain, and the Microwave.

Winter is a great time to visit nearby Smithers – Nordic skiing on Hudson Bay Mountain offers endless miles of tranquil trails just waiting to be discovered. Hudson Bay Mountain Resort offers plenty of light, dry powder for downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. Ski and snowboard rentals are available.

Nestled in the Bulkley Valley at the base of Hudson Bay Mountain is Smithers Golf & Country Club, an 18-hole par 72 golf course offering challenging play on well groomed holes. The exciting course is surrounded by a thick carpet of forest that descends from Hudson Bay Mountain, with forested fairways, a creek that comes into play on several holes, and glacier views as far as the eye can see.
