South of Dawson Creek are a handful of regional and provincial parks, the largest of which is Swan Lake Provincial Park, located in the high, flat prairies of northeastern British Columbia. The Alaska Highway officially begins in Dawson Creek, and is one of the longest, loneliest stretches of road you’ll ever have the pleasure of driving.
The park hosts the usual variety of water-related activities – swimming, canoeing and boating. There is a boat launch at Swan Lake Provincial Park, and good walleye, northern pike, yellow perch and burbot. Almost every provincial park supports sportfishing, and many Forest Service recreation sites were built specifically for anglers looking for a place to park near their favourite spot.
Swan Lake provides 42 vehicle/tent campsites and provides basic facilities – picnic tables, pit toilets, fire pits, firewood and water, a large picnic/day-use area, a children’s playground and a baseball diamond. The campground is open from May to September and fees are collected during this period.
Swan Lake Provincial Park is located in Northern British Columbia, 22 miles (35 km) south of Dawson Creek, just off Highway 2.
